Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese technique which involves repairing broken ceramics by glueing them back together with lacquer sprinkled with gold powder. Rather than hiding the crack, Kintsugi makes it more visible. The crack then becomes an aesthetic feature, a beautiful line which tells the piece’s story. More than a technique, Kintsugi is a philosophy which centres on repairing, marking the passing of time and overcoming adversity. Whatever has been broken is not erased, but enhanced.
Adapting Kintsugi to leather goods
At Atelier Renard, we wondered: couldn’t leather also be broken apart, put back together again and, in the process, made even more beautiful? This question sparked the idea of adapting the principles of Kintsugi to hand-crafted leather goods, not merely as an aesthetic exercise, but as a genuine exploration of the material itself, the skills involved and the resulting appearance.
From craftsmanship to art
For this limited edition series, we came up with several variations on a design, based on the same model: a smaller version of our iconic bag, Le K. Each design is unique, created as a composition which combines a natural element with different coloured leather.
The pieces are then cut out and reassembled, using a leather marquetry technique which requires the utmost precision. Each piece must fit perfectly and precisely with the other, so that the join becomes a line, a rhythm, a form of writing. Everything is then sewn entirely by hand, sometimes using gold or silver thread, adding another touch of Kintsugi to the process.
A limited edition of unique pieces
The result is a collection of unique pieces; each bag tells a different story.
Here, repairs are not concealed. Here, repairs become a language of their own, an aesthetic,
a way of celebrating the material’s transformation. This leather Kintsugi collection is available in very limited quantities, in keeping with our vision of slow, meticulous and deeply creative craftsmanship. The bags are featured in our online shop.

In brief
Inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, this limited edition collection transforms the repair of leather into a creative act, where art meets craftsmanship.
