A history of craftsmanship and high standards

From its founder, Joseph Renard, one of the first leatherworker members of Le Tour de France des Compagnons (an elite French craft guild) who was renowned for his remarkable craftsmanship, to Brigitte Montaut and Rémi Meunier, who are now at the helm, the same philosophy has prevailed:
a discerning and distinctive approach to French handcrafted leather goods, resolutely bucking the trend of mass production.

At Atelier Renard, time never speeds up. Working slowly is a choice, almost a necessity, to achieve a level of precision where every detail counts.

No compromise on custom design

Whether we’re creating truly bespoke pieces to cater to the wildest flight of fancy or the most unique needs, or working with extraordinary leathers which have been chosen by our clients, one rule always holds true: nothing is left to chance.

Every seam, every edge and every dimension is considered with the utmost care. And if we have to start again, then that’s exactly what we’ll do. Perfection cannot be achieved through shortcuts or approximation.

When technique takes over

With every piece we create, we strive for perfection – not asan abstract ideal, but as a daily discipline. In these moments of intense concentration, the mind goes blank. Time seems to stand still. Using tools which have stood the test of time, our leatherworkers’ meticulous work allows each and every piece to take shape. 

It’s this silent precision which leads to the most exquisite pieces being created, pieces which will last for years to come before being passed down through generations, while looking as beautiful as ever.

Expertise, however valuable it may be, is just a succession of technical skills, unless it’s fuelled by creativity. At Atelier Renard, every project begins with a drawing. Imagination must precede execution; creativity must pave the way for technique.

Creating also means pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship: drawing on decades of knowledge in response to the item’s purpose, how it will be used and the lifestyle of the person who will wear it.
